Casino History

From a single casino roulette room to a limestone estate

Sweppen opened in 1987 as a fourteen-table casino gaming room attached to a fishing-village hotel outside St. Julian's. The original owners, a family of hoteliers with a taste for baccarat, built the first floor by hand — quite literally, hiring the same stonemasons who restored the bastions of Valletta to lay the casino's limestone archways.

Over four decades the estate grew outward rather than upward, wrapping around a natural cove so that no suite, restaurant, or gaming room sits more than a four-minute walk from the water. Today Sweppen operates under a full Malta Gaming Authority licence, employs over 900 people across gaming, culinary, and hospitality divisions, and remains privately held.

The Casino Floor

Sixty-two casino tables. One unhurried night.

Spread across three connected halls — the Colonnade, the Vault, and the private Signet Room — Sweppen's gaming floor is built for depth of play rather than volume of foot traffic. Ceilings run high, tables sit apart, and dealers are trained to remember names, not just wagers.

The Colonnade

Our main hall holds twenty-eight tables of American and European roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and three-card poker beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling salvaged from a decommissioned granary. It is the liveliest room in the house, open to all resort guests and day visitors from 11:00 to 04:00.

Live dealers rotate every forty minutes to keep the game sharp, and a resident sommelier pours by request tableside — a Sweppen tradition since the 1990s that guests still ask for by name.

The Vault & The Signet Room

The Vault, our high-limit hall, occupies what was once the estate's actual wine cellar — the arched brick ceilings are original. Access requires a Sweppen Privé card, issued on request at check-in or through our concierge line.

Beyond it sits the Signet Room: four tables, no fixed limits, and a single rule — reservations only, arranged personally through your host. It is where the estate's longest-standing members play baccarat the way it was meant to be played, without an audience.

Slots & Electronic Gaming

340 casino slot machines, curated rather than crammed

The Reel Room houses our full slot and electronic table game collection — mechanical three-reel classics through to multi-line video slots and electronic roulette terminals — arranged in low-lit alcoves rather than open rows, so the noise of the floor never quite reaches your seat.

Sweppen Privé

VIP casino lounges built for people who dislike being seen arriving

Privé membership grants access to two dedicated casino lounges — the Cove Room, overlooking the water, and the windowless, deliberately quiet Archive — along with a private entrance from the underground car park directly into the Vault.

Members receive a personal host, priority reservations at all five restaurants, complimentary suite upgrades on qualifying stays, and an invitation to the estate's quarterly invitation-only tournament weekends.

Suites & Residences

214 suites, none of them facing a car park

Every room at Sweppen faces either the cove or the estate's private gardens. Interiors are the work of Maltese design studio Belliá & Grech, who favour limestone, brushed brass, and linen over anything that could be mistaken for a chain hotel.

486 seats, carved into the old limestone quarry

The Aurelia hosts a rotating calendar of jazz residencies, chamber orchestra evenings, and cabaret revues, staged in a hall literally cut from the quarry the original estate was built from. Acoustically, it remains one of the best-reviewed small venues in the Mediterranean.

Sweppen suite guests receive priority seating; Privé members receive two complimentary tickets per stay to any standard performance.

About Sweppen

A privately owned gaming and hospitality estate on the northern coast of Malta, operating since 1987.

← Back to Sweppen

Sweppen Resorts Ltd was founded in 1987 by the Debattista-Farrugia family as a fourteen-table gaming room attached to a small coastal hotel. Four decades on, it remains privately held by the same family, now spanning a 214-suite resort, a 62-table casino across three gaming halls, five independently run restaurants, and the 486-seat Aurelia Theatre.

The estate operates under a licence issued by the Malta Gaming Authority and adheres to the jurisdiction's requirements on responsible gambling, anti-money-laundering controls, and player protection. Sweppen employs over 900 people across its gaming, culinary, and hospitality divisions, the majority of whom live within twenty minutes of the property.

Our name has no grand etymology — it comes from Sweppen Point, the small rocky promontory the original hotel was built on. We kept it because everyone who worked there already called it that.
